Essential Question: How did the 2nd Industrial Revolution spur urbanization in America? How were political machines harmful to the new American urban community in the late 1800s and early 1900s? |

Higher Order Questions: How was urban life different from rural life? How did the conditions of the urban working class differ from those of other social classes? What were consequences of the rapid growth of cities in the late 1800s? What function did political machines serve?

Instructional Strategy Ideas: I Do Teachers could use political cartoons from Puck magazine that illustrate the consequences of urbanization during this time period. Teachers may also use a PPT that guides students through notes illustrating the problems of cities, but is limited to the designated timeframe of the I DO/WE DO portion of the instructional framework.
We Do Student groups could create a T chart identifying the changes that occurred as the United States shifted from an agrarian to an industrial society. You Do Students could write a letter to a friend or relative back home from the perspective of an individual in the city who has migrated from the South. |
Differentiation Ideas: Student groups can be separated by political, social, and economic effects of urbanization for the We Do task. Teacher led group could include a brief video on the effects of urbanization |
